Fish oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly the essential fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). These acids are involved in cell signalling and contribute to the maintenance of optimal fluidity and structure of cell membranes. They influence the normal functioning of the nervous system and glucose concentration, which is extremely important for maintaining energy throughout the day [1]. EPA and DHA acids influence the normal functioning of the heart, as well as the maintenance of normal triglyceride concentrations in the blood. Elevated triglyceride concentrations can promote the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack. Consumption of min. 2g of EPA and DHA per day contributes to lowering blood triglyceride levels. In addition, EPA and DHA have a beneficial effect on the number of heart beats per minute (pulse), platelet aggregation and endothelial function in blood vessels [2]. By affecting the composition of cell membrane phospholipids, EPA and DHA acids contribute to mediators that alleviate inflammation in the body [3]. It is suspected that omega-3 fatty acids may be important in maintaining optimal body weight and abdominal fat [4]. Being part of the brain and visual structure, DHA acids are involved in maintaining normal brain function and also contribute to optimal visual acuity. We can obtain these valuable components by consuming fish and seafood, including but not limited to: cod, salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, oysters, as well as providing them through the consumption of fish oil.
Our food supplement Super Omega, 2900 mg Omega-3 is a Norwegian-produced oil extracted from sustainably fished pelagic fish (mainly anchovies). It contains a high concentration of essential fatty acids (DHA and EPA) in a highly digestible triglyceride form. One teaspoon per day (5 ml) provides up to 2900 mg of omega-3 fatty acids (including: 1450 mg EPA and 1000 mg DHA) for the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels.
