‘Free Me Now’ channels the spirit of Boy George’s lifelong performance of self, expressed through music, fashion and art. The punk-inspired figure stands confidently, its starkly contrasting hair and skin reminiscent of the artist’s New Romantic style, in which he decorated his face, neck and ears with purposely lurid colour. 

The piece bursts with character, echoing the vitality and expressive power of Boy George’s distinctive aesthetic. Accentuated details like a button for an eye, sweeping lashes and the veil of glitter serve as signatures of his personal style. 

Part of the collection, Punky Doodle Dandies, this artwork is one half of a twin set. Its counterpart ‘Desperate to Come Out’ can be positioned alongside this piece to capture twin characters with mirrored expressions, a celebration of duality, transformation and self-expression.
