Lyrically, the album follows a central theme: Ian Gillan was mapping out his next steps. The concepts explored here revolve around escape and rebirth fitting, as shortly after Magic's release and supporting tour, the band disbanded, and Ian Gillan went on to join Black Sabbath for their Mk II reunion shows.

This expanded edition comprises of two discs. Disc one features the original Magic album including eight original tracks, co written by Ian Gillan and Colin Towns, along with a cover of Stevie Wonder's 1973 hit Living for the City. Disc two features eight B sides, album outtakes and an Ian Gillan solo single released in 1988 called South Africa.
